happy hens!
It's now 3 weeks since Susie, Rosie, Hendrix and Penne arrived and they have settled in well, with the 2 collies and us. They have a nice big run and cosy coop - but come rushing to the gate to get out into the rest of the garden for bug hunting, as soon they see us coming! The time has flown and we have been enjoying spending much more time outdoors - having breakfast with them and just watching them wander aound - it's very relaxing. So far Susie has given us 15 delicious eggs - including a 90gm double yolker. We think we have easily have room for another 2, so we'll be back in touch soon. Thanks for your help. best wishes to you all, the Sidneys

Yoker yokes
Hi Kim, Jackie

My four plucky girls are setteling in nicely here in Yoker,we've called them Foghorn, Leghorn, Specky & Gus. Speckey is the most brazen wee birdy you could ever meet. We've likend her to the famous grouse from the whiskey adds, glad we decided to add her to our intended flock of 3.
The girls like their eglu and I've got plenty of chicken poo for my compost bin. Leghorn hasn't produced an egg yet, but my husband tricked me well with one from the fridge. Much laughter was spent at my eggcitement.
I've already got orders from friends and family.
My feathered foursome provided great entertainment this afternoon chasing each other around the garden fighting over juicey slugs and snails. Leghorn is thick, you would think being bigger and 3 months older, she would be the most dominant, well no! The other 3 blitz attack her and she struts away with a dazed expresion on her face. My cat Smokey thought she'd sneak up on the girls, but thought better of it when they rounded on her, beaks pecking and wings flapping.

Thanks again
Kirsty

Eggs in the city
Hi Kim and Jackie

The girls (Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte) are settling in well and loving their new home in Stirling! They took a couple of nights to get used to the ladder but have got the hang of it and have usually put themselves to bed by the time we go out to shut them in for the night.

Miranda (calder ranger) is proving to be the top hen, giving the others a wee peck on the bum to let them know who's boss! We have as you warned become chicken bores are are driving everyone else daft talking about our 'girls'. However think we may ahve inspired some people to get hens and have passed on your details. Dave is particularly protective over them and has now decided to build onto the run making it full height (having a problem with a local cat who is a bit too curious!)

look forward to seeing you soon - the craft days sound good will try and come down.

Dear Kim,
Thank you so much for the much welcomed and valued visit to your glorious Farm. The children in my care that morning had the most memorable visit and I have already reccommended the hands on experience your farm gives to everyone visiting. As Chairperson of The Clydesdale Childminding Association I will add your business to our website and on our return after the school break will dedicate a meeting with Clydesdale Childminders to discuss the experience visiting your farm brings to children.
Thank you for your heartfelt, warm welcome. The children came away with big smiles and many stories.
Kind Regards

RE:4 Chick's 23 May 2010

Hi, Firstly I would like to say that our first vist to Fuefield was most wellcome the whole aura of fuefield was that of visiting an old friend which was clearly natural and comfortable, once again thankyou, I'd also like to let you know Molly, Masie, Maggie and Minnie have almost doubled in size, Jean our one and only old Hen sits by the A-Frame and when Mildred and Maude our cats go by Jean lets them know that this area is out of bounds, so dont think there will be any issues there.

Nigel and the Girls
What a weekend! I feel as though my feet have hardly touched the ground. Well they didn't for a while -one minute I was walking across the yard minding my own business then next thing I knew I was travelling in the back of a car with two rather lovely young girls (Cinders and Blanche). We turned up at a new place which had two equally lovely but more grown up girls called Glenda and Gwendoline. I thought Glenda was mad at first as she ran round the perimeter of the garden squawking her head off. On the other hand Gwendo took an instant shine to me!! The two younger girls are having a bit of a hard time with the incumbent hens, so I'm having to divide my favours between the two pairs. At night I have to sleep between them to stop any sly pecks. Things are settling down though and I'm enjoying visits from the neighbours who are bring scraps and throwing them in for us. I reward them by standing on the chicken house and giving them my best cock-a-doodle-doos, nice and early to get them all up for work. Hi to everyone at Feufield. Nigel x

Unscheduled visit Thursday 28th April
Hi,

Need cheering up?

I certainly did on thursday, so I decided to make a long overdue visit to Feufield, not realising that open days are weekends.

What a lovely warm, friendly welcome! After a brief, but most entertaining introduction to the " Feufield" family, a very refreshing cup of tea, and sympathy from Kim,Taz and Mustang Sally, I left feeling so much happier.

Thanks everyone!!
I have sampled Fifi & Etienne's Strawberry & Vanilla jam,Taz's Onion Marmalade, and devoured Mustang Sally's Raspberry special(gosh, and it's only Sunday). DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As promised I am bringing John today so we can both be properly introduced to to the family. It's a gloious day in Bo'ness.

Teenage pullet
Dear Kim - I said I'd let you know how the egg-sitting went with our teenage Wyandotte broody, and I'm afraid it wasn't well. She gave up on the eggs last week after some erratic dithering, and we had to scrap those lovely Legbar eggs you gave us as cold. Great shame, but I reckon she was just too inexperienced. We'll try her again if she looks determined. On a brighter note, the chutneys are superb and long gone. We'll be coming for more soon. Janice and Jonathan

Hi Kim and Jackie
We wanted to let you know our new girls are settling in very well. We can't believe how much they have grown in a couple of days. Our girls absolutely love them too, Emily has named her Calder Ranger Melissa and her light sussex is called sarah. The rest are patiently waiting for their leg rings to arrive before being named. We are now hoping for better weather over the weekend so we can all go out in the garden to join them. Take care and looking forward to hearing from you once our legbars have hatched out. Then our family will most definately be complete!!!

Latest additions
Just a quick note to say how happy I am that my latest additions (2 Rhode Rocks and 2 Calder Rangers) have quickly settled in to their new home and are enjoying life (as is witnessed by my newly decimated gooseberry bush and non-existent strawberries). I haven't started on the chutney yet - I'm saving that for the weekend!

Hi Kim and Jackie - Thanks for all your help and advice on getting us set up with a great chalet and run and lovely hens - they are settling in well and I am enjoying getting to know their different characters! We are planning to let them explore more of the garden from this weekend which will be fun. The eggs from Feufield were delicious and we will be looking forward to our own before long hopefully. update on our lovely girls
we had our girls for 4 weeks now and we have had more than 70 eggs ...Yesterday one of our speckeldy hens layed a 75 gramm (2.6 ounces)egg and it had 2 big yolkes in it! Mummy used it to bake a lovely cake for us! The hens eat out of my hand when I go and feed them their corn in the afternoon. They also like digging for slugs! I am so glad that we have our hens now as I love them very much!

Hope to see you all again soon

Hi
Just to let you kinow that the girls - Buffy, Cordelia, Willow and Anya are all absolutely gorgeous - they started laying just before Xmas and they are laying really well - one question though - is it normal for them all to sleep in one egg box on top of each other - there are three boxes and 3 roosts which they ignore!
I can't wait for the good weather to get back down to see you - you do my heart glad. I also think you should go on facebook and then I could share you...
Love & hugs

found my first egg!
Today my mum let me out to check on the chickens. I was all excited to see them again as they are very friendly. They always come to say hello and they will eat out of my hand. I opene the lid of the nesting box and there I saw it: a perfect little brown egg! It is the first egg I have ever found and I was very excited. I think I will ask my mummy to cook it for dinner tonight.
Before we left we got our hen out and gave her a big cuddle and said: Thank you lovely hen for laying this wonderful egg for us!
The hen was very proud of herself too.
Now I can't wait to go back outside to find more eggs soon......

Happy event!
Hiya, Just to let you know that the first one of our eggs hatched this morning. It was one of the blue ones that we weren't sure had been fertilised. Another one has a crack so Im sure her sister will appear tonight some time tonight. Will send you pictures soon. Florence (the boss) Isa, Babs and Tikka are all fine too and well settled. Only a few more weeks before the possibility of eggs from them. They now have the run of the full garden and the cats make sure they don't stray too far! Hope to see you both soon. Settling in
Hi there

Just wanted to post a thankyou for your advice, help and patience with a complete hen novice.

Our three girls - not that you'd know from their names... Harry Potter, Dumbledore and Hagrid (as Finlay, our 3yr old son is adamant that they are boys, as girl hens are 'naughty') are settling in nicely, and we've had one very small egg from one of them yesterday, which was a thill...

They're being let out on the 4th to explore the garden proper, and then the fun will really begin!

Hope to see you both next weekend at the roast - thanks again.

Kind regards

the Craigs

Thanks again and we wish you both the very best for the future.

Thank you
Hi Kim & Jackie,

Thought I'd just let you know how very well Gertie (Gertrude) and Tilly (Matilda) and the quail are settling in. I'm now collecting the covetted blue eggs from G&T (without the help of a gin & tonic) and ten eggs per day from the quail. I'm really happy. I alsp thank you for the lovely day my parents and I spent with you when I collected the girls.
The produce we took home was also first class.

I wish you much, well deserved, success in the future.
Will visit again ASAP.
